Dementia Caregiving Research Brief

  1. Support should follow caregiving transitions not only dementia stages

Published September 28, 2026 — peer-reviewed qualitative study

Interviews with 38 primary family caregivers identified changing needs across home-based dementia care:

  • Before diagnosis: recognizing concerning changes and finding assessment
  • During service use: navigating fragmented systems and family decisions
  • During sustained home care: practical relief, symptom guidance, emotional support and financial protection

Why it matters: A resource organized only as “early, middle and late dementia” may miss the actual work overwhelming families.

Changing care work and support needs across the home-based dementia care trajectory: a qualitative study of family caregivers in China.
